ABOUT THE COURSE

Life in the prehistoric and ancient worlds was much different than the modern world we experience today. A lot of what we know about that life, particularly before the development of writing, has come down to us through the art that these societies created.

In this 9-week class (approximately 20-25 minutes/class), we will explore the art of this time. We will begin during the prehistoric era, about 40,000 years ago, when primitive societies first began expressing themselves through art with cave paintings, hand drawings and figurines. We will end with the art of the ancient world, dated from the time when writing was introduced about 5,000 years ago, when societies were more developed and artistic styles and methods took great leaps forward. We are particularly interested in the status of women and will try to find out as much as we can about them through the art we discover. Join us as we investigate.
