Paleolithic Era
The Paleolithic Era, also known as the Old Stone Age, is a period that lasted from about 2.6 million years ago to around 10000 BCE. During this time, early humans lived as hunter-gatherers, relying on hunting, fishing, and gathering wild plants for survival. They also developed basic tools and weapons made from stone, bone, and wood. The Paleolithic Era is considered a crucial period in human evolution, as it laid the foundation for the development of agriculture, civilization, and modern society.
After a brief discussion about how to interpret art (look, describe, think, connect), we delve right into the art of the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) Era. We will learn how prehistoric humans were hunters and gatherers. This nomadic lifestyle limited what they were able to create but was also reflected in the art that was produced. We will discuss female representation in cave drawings and sculptures and how we can determine women’s position in society based on these works. The specific works we will focus on include the Altimira Caves, the Lascaux Caves, the Venus of Willendorf, the Laussel Woman, and the Tassili N’Ajjer Running Woman, among others.
